Nyia Parler, 41, the woman who allegedly abandoned her quadriplegic son in a forested area off Cobbs Creek Parkway while she went out of state to see her boyfriend, was hospitalized after police placed her in custody, reports say.
The reason for Parler’s hospitalization has not been made public.
Authorities in Montgomery County, Maryland took Parler into custody, the Washington Post reported Sunday.
Parler was visiting boyfriend John Ferguson in Silver Spring, Maryland, the New York Daily News reported.
She left her 21-year-old son, who has cerebral palsy and is quadriplegic, in a forested area off Cobbs Creek Parkway in West Philadelphia on Monday, April 6, before taking off — where he was found five days later by a passerby who contacted police.
The 21-year-old man was reportedly found lying under a blanket with a Bible and his wheelchair some feet away from him.
Philadelphia Police said they have an active warrant for Parler’s arrest on charges of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment of another person.
Her son was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for malnutrition, exposure, dehydration, and a cut to his back.
Authorities were alerted that Parler’s son was missing after his school called authorities when he didn’t show up on Tuesday.
According to the Post, Parler’s boyfriend also contacted police after he learned she had abandoned her son in the woods.
Maryland police arrested Parler on a Philadelphia warrant but won’t return her to the city until she is treated for her undisclosed medical condition.
