Philly police investigating whether officer used racial slur on radio

Philadelphia police are investigating a report that an officer used the N-word over police radio.

City Councilmember Cherelle Parker said Thursday that she received text messages from two different people notifying her that an officer was allegedly heard saying “those f—ing n—–s” over the airwaves when responding to a call. Another person on the line responded, “Okay,” according to Parker.

The incident is being investigated by the police department’s Internal Affairs Unit, a PPD spokesperson told Metro on Thursday afternoon, adding that: “We have no further information to release.”

“As this issue is investigated, I join with the people of our city in anxiously awaiting those results,” Parker said in a statement Thursday evening.

She revealed the allegations near the end of a four-hour virtual Council session.

“The arrogance that it takes to do something like that,” Parker said during the meeting, “the disregard for humanity and the willingness to embrace that kind of language as if it’s second nature is something we should continue to have zero tolerance for.”
