Extreme temperatures in Philly put a slight damper on the summer fun this weekend.

As temperatures reached the high 90s on Sunday and humidity blanketed the city, BBQs were canceled. So were block parties. Some locals fled for cooler environs on the Shore. Those in the city stayed close to the air-conditioning unit ortried to dunk themselves in the nearest cold fountain.

An excessive heat warning is in effect for the Philadelphia area until 8 p.m. Monday with a predicted temperature of 95 degrees that with high humidity will feel like 100 degrees or higher, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 93 Tuesday, with partly cloudy weather, and then down on Wednesday and Thursday to around 87 degrees.

While the heat is here, locals are being urged to monitor elderly neighbors and relatives.

The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging hasactivated its Heatline (215-765-9040) which provides info to seniors to prevent emergencies and advice on how to stay healthy while beating the heat, including air conditioned locations and year-round senior services where people can go to cool off.
