PHOTOS: Philly remembers Martin Luther King Jr. with National Day of Service

In recognition of activist Martin Luther King, Jr., families flocked to the National Constitution Center to participate in the Greater Philadelphia Day of Service.

Participants stuffed and sewed pillows for local
nonprofit Women Against Abuse, which provides emergency shelter,
transitional housing and legal, behavioral and educational services to
victims of domestic violence.

“We wanted to do something for the Martin Luther King Day of Service rather than sit at home and play video games,” said Michelle Berry, who brought her son Davion to the event along with her three other children.

The Berrys also came to watch President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony, which the Constitution Center broadcast on widescreen televisions.

“I wanted them to experience part of history,” Berry said. “Obama being not only the first black president, but also being voted in two times, now officially.”
