Playing the Field: Popovich burns reporter, Gabby Union shows off bling

Sideline reporters are the most unnecessary people in the sports world. There is absolutely no need for them to troll the field or court during games to seek scripted answers to generic questions. Yet here they are — at every game, in every stadium, asking stupid questions.

On Thursday night, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich did his best to curb the annoying tradition. With all apologies to smoke show Samantha Steele, we applaud the future Hall of Fame coach for giving us 45 seconds of awkward, on-air bliss.

Gabby got bling, too

Behind every great man is a great WAG — wives and girlfriends of celebrities for the uninformed — and behind every great WAG is a huge piece of bling. But we’re not talking about wedding rings or extra-marital affair presents. No, no … we’re talking about championship bling.

That’s right, LeBron James’ fiancée, Savannah Brinson, and Dwyane Wade’s girlfriend, Gabrielle Union, took to Instagram to show off their NBA championship rings. The Heat were presented with their hardware prior to their opener against the Celtics this past week. While it appears to be a replica (not the 219-diamond version) it is interesting to note that the Heat acknowledged the importance of the women keeping their superstars, well, let’s say relaxed …

Union is still waiting for a wedding ring, but apparently she isn’t in a hurry.

“I’m open to everything, but right now I just like saying “my boyfriend, my boyfriend, my boyfriend D Wade’. And then maybe later, provided my eggs aren’t dust, we’ll see what I can (coughs) cough out,” Union told Atlantablackstar.com.

Ladies everywhere, heed Gabby’s words. That’s how not to lose a man.
