What went right …
1 MVP, MVP, MVP. It’s only April, but if fans wanted to start throwing “MVP” chants Placido Polanco’s way, we don’t see a problem. The All-Star third baseman erased a 3-0 deficit with one swing yesterday and tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth. It was his second homer in his last four games. He is batting .352 with two dingers and 15 RBIs (ranking second in the NL) this season.
2 Gut check. It wasn’t the usual, lights-out performance we’ve come to expect from Cliff Lee, but it was enough. The lefty gutted out six quality innings on a day when he clearly didn’t have his best stuff. Lee allowed two earned runs — a third run scored on a rare Wilson Valdez error — in six innings. He left with a no-decision.
3 Small ball leads to long ball. After John Mayberry’s double broke up a no-hitter in the fifth, the Phils played a little small ball. With Valdez stealing second, Shane Victorino slapped a single to put runners at first and third. Then, Polanco stepped up and homered to tie it. Victorino homered in the eighth to put the Phillies ahead for good.
