Police car burns after weekend collision with civilian vehicle

A Philadelphia police car was involved in a collision on Saturday afternoon that left both drivers injured but in stable condition.

No drivers lef the scene of the incident, which has erroneously been reported elsewhere as a “hit-and-run.”

The 30-year-old male police officer involved in the crashwas driving with lights and sirens activated to a priority call westbound on Tasker Street when the crash occurred around 5:22 p.m.

The civilian driver, a 52-year-old male in a 2004 Toyota Tacoma, was driving south on 28th Street and turned left into the intersection with Tasker as the officer came through, at which point the vehicles crashed, according to police.

Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles.

Two good Samaritans, a 17-year old and another man rushed over and helped both drivers out of their vehicles. The teenager sustained burns to his hands in the process and also required hospitalization.

The civilian driver sustained head injuries.

The police officer sustained head injuries from his air bag, as well as burns to his hands and legs.

After the accident, the police officer’s vehicle became “engulfed in flames” and firefighters responded to bring the fire under control.

No drivers left the scene of the accident, no drivers were suspected of DUI, and there were no passengers in either vehicle, police said.

Below, see footage of the blaze.
