Police double bail for Jermal Ponds, man suspected of bringing AK-47 on subway

A judge Friday morning doubled the bail set for Jermal Pond, 28, from $100,000 to $200,000, according to a release from the District Attorney’s Office. Pond was slapped with weapons charges and possession with intent to deliver in addition to the controlled substance, unlicensed and unconcealed gun and pot charges he already faced.

The man is accused of riding SEPTA’s Broad Street Line subway Tuesday evening with a bag containing a .38 revolver with six bullets in the chamber, marijuana, Percocet painkillers and a partially dismantled AK-47 with a bayonette and 40-round clip.

His preliminary hearing is set for August 17.

The District Attorney’s Office also announced the arraignment of Jimmy Morrison, 41, arrested Thursday for allegedly assaulting Democratic committeewoman Yvonne Gaines, 87, and her son, 62, during a home invasion on the 5600 block of Catharine Street in West Philadelphia early Tuesday morning.

State Sen. Anthony
Williams and Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell on Tuesday announced a $5,000 dollar reward for Morrison’s arrest.

Morrison was arraigned on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, theft and criminal trespassing. He is being held on $3 million bail. His preliminary hearing is also scheduled for August 17.
