On Wednesday morning, the Philadelphia Police released the identity of a 39-year-old man who was shot by officers in a shooting that occurred earlier this month.
According to police, Anthony Middleton was shot by police on August 19, after an incident along the 2500 block of N. Alder Street in Kensington.
According to police, at about 11:0f p.m., that night, bicycle officers in the city’s 22nd police district, observed Middleton walking along the sidewalk while carrying a handgun. Police said that Sergeant David Ewing, a 13-year veteran of the force, dismounted his bike and told Middleton to “drop the gun.”
Instead, law enforcement officials say, Middleton ran to a nearby alleyway and, allegedly, raised his gun at Ewing as the officer pursued Middleton. Entering the alleyway, police said that as he scanned the alleyway with a flashlight, Ewing saw Middleton aiming the weapon and the officer fired four times, striking Middleton in his leg and right side.
Middleton was transported to Temple University Hospital in stable condition.
Police said that they recovered Middleton’s semi-automatic pistol after the incent and learned that the gun had been reported stolen from Clearfield, Pa., back in October.
No one else was injured in this shooting and, police said, Middleton has been arrested and charged with gun violations and the receipt of stolen property.
