Police investigating after alleged robber shot dead in parking lot

Detectives continue to investigate the fatal shooting of a man who allegedly attempted to commit a carjacking Saturday afternoon near a CVS in East Germantown.

Police said a 59-year-old man was near his car in the parking lot of the store, at 6433 Stenton Ave., when a 20-year-old man tried to take his vehicle and personal belongings.

A struggle ensued, with the 59-year-old man yelling for help, authorities said. That’s when a third man, a supervisor at a security company, intervened, shooting the younger man three times.

The 20-year-old was transported to Einstein Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Police have not identified any of the men involved, and, as of Sunday afternoon, no charges have been filed.

Elsewhere in the city, a 19-year-old man was gunned down while waiting for food early Saturday morning inside a Chinese restaurant on the 5000 block of N. 8th Street in Olney.

Investigators said the teenager was the only customer there at around 2:15 a.m. when someone fired several shots from the outside. He was hit multiple times in the chest, neck and left leg.

Police said he died several minutes later at Einstein.

Meanwhile, in West Philadelphia, a man was hospitalized with serious injuries after a car crash led to a shooting.

The victim, a 29-year-old, was driving when his vehicle was hit early Saturday morning near 58th Street and Baltimore Avenue, authorities said. He confronted the other driver, who tried to flee the scene, and ended up striking an unoccupied car.

Then, he fled on foot, as the 29-year-old tried to follow him in his car, investigators said. He lost him and decided to wait for police at 62nd Street and Washington Avenue.

But, he caught sight of the man again, and chased him. The suspect shot him, and, as the two tussled, he fired several more times, according to police.

The 29-year-old man ran back to his car and tried to drive to a nearby police station. He lost consciousness, and officers found him just after 1:15 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his chest after crashing into a corner house at 61st and Christian streets.

Investigators recovered the suspect’s car, a Hyundai Sonata, still running at 62nd and Washington.

Police said the 29-year-old man is in “stable but critical” condition at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. The other man has not been apprehended.

At around 11:15 p.m. Saturday, a 56-year-old man was shot four times in the leg near Ridge and Allegheny avenues in North Philadelphia, police said. He was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.

A 20-year-old man rushed to the hospital after being stabbed in the neck and shoulder at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday inside a house on the 1700 block of S. 5th Street in South Philadelphia, authorities said.

Officers arrested a suspect at the scene and recovered a weapon. The victim, police said, is in stable condition.

Also in South Philadelphia, two men were wounded after shots rang out just before 11:30 a.m. Saturday on the 2200 block of S. 7th Street, authorities said.

A 36-year-old man was shot twice in the abdomen and once in the left thigh, and a 28-year-old man was struck in the left knee. Neither suffered life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Detectives are looking for a group that pistol-whipped a woman in front of her children during a home invasion robbery early Saturday morning in Mayfair.

She was sleeping on the second floor of her house on the 3200 block of Friendship Street when, at around 3:30 a.m., three people, all of whom were armed with handguns, broke in through a back door.

The suspects showed up in her room with her four children and pointed their guns at her, striking her with the weapons several times, police said. They demanded she tell them where the money was, investigators said.

She gave them $4,000 she kept in a drawer and the keys to her 2013 Honda Civic, which they took along with a 75-inch television, home security system and cellphone, according to police.

The woman told detectives she does not have a lot of money and is not sure why the suspects targeted her.

She suffered a bruise to her head. The children were not injured.
