Police investigating after body found in South Philly

Detectives are investigating after a woman’s body was found in a plastic container in South Philadelphia, and officers arrested a suspect after a man was gunned down in broad daylight Wednesday morning.

Two others were killed and seven more were injured in recent shootings.

The city’s homicide rate is 26 percent above where it was at this point last year, and a total of 220 people have been murdered, according to police statistics.

Authorities haven’t yet officially ruled the South Philadelphia case a homicide, so far opting to call it a “suspicious death.”

The woman, described only as a Black female, was discovered at 9:45 a.m. Monday on the 3000 block of Wharton Street in Grays Ferry, authorities said. She was covered with saran wrap inside a large gray container.

A 20-year-old man died at the hospital at around 12:30 p.m. Monday, around an hour after he had been shot on the 200 block of S. Alden Street in West Philadelphia, police said. He suffered gunshot wounds to his head, chest and lower back.

Officers made an arrest and recovered a gun. Police are withholding the suspect’s name until charges are filed.

In North Philadelphia, a 20-year-old man was killed after gunfire rang out at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday near 23rd and Diamond Streets, authorities said.

Police rushed the man, who had been shot in the head, to Temple University Hospital, where he later died. A second victim, a 25-year-old man, showed up at a different hospital with a gunshot wound to his left elbow. He is in stable condition.

No arrests have been made, authorities said.

Investigators are searching for a gunman who killed a 28-year-old man Tuesday night in Kensington.

Officers were called to the 1800 block of E. Allegheny Avenue just after 10:30 p.m., where they found Andre Ruff, of Holmesburg, on the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.

Police said the suspect was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black pants and fled in a dark-colored car heading east toward Frankford Avenue.

Several hours later, just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, three people showed up to local hospitals after a shooting on the 3000 block of A Street in Kensington, police said.

A 26-year-old man had been shot in the stomach and was in critical condition at Temple Hospital.

Another man was hit once in the right leg, and a 28-year-old woman was also shot in the leg. Both were in stable condition, authorities said.

Investigators haven’t apprehended a suspect.

Officers were called to the 2600 block of Tasker Street in South Philadelphia at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a person with a gun, and they found 18 spent shell casings and a metal projectile.

Investigators said a 24-year-old man connected with the incident drove himself to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. There was no word on his condition.

Earlier in the evening, police were responded to the 2700 block of Daly Terrace, which is part of the Wilson Park Apartments, a Philadelphia Housing Authority development in South Philadelphia.

A house on the block had its front windows and glass door shattered, but no ballistic evidence was found at the scene. Investigators received word about 15 minutes later that a man and a woman had arrived at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with gunshot wounds.

Detectives continue to investigate the shooting.
