Police shoot armed male in Kensington

A bicycle officer in the city’s 22nd police district wounded an armed male in Kensington shooting on Saturday night.

According to police, at about 11:05 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, a sergeant in the city’s 22nd police district – who the police have yet to identify – allegedly spotted a black male walking along the 2500 block of N. Adler Street with a gun in his hand.

At that time, law enforcement officials say, the officer dismounted his bike and told the man to “drop the gun.”

However, the male ran into a nearby alleyway and, police said, the officer followed. But, when the officer entered the alley, police said, he saw the male raising his weapon towards the officer.

According to law enforcement officials, the police sergeant fired four times in the man’s direction, striking the individual in the leg and right side.

Police said that the male, who has not yet been identified by police, was transported to Temple University Hospital in stable condition and, after the shooting, police recovered the man’s semi-automatic handgun, loaded with ten rounds, from the alleyway.

Police said the gun had been reported stolen from Clearfield, Pa., back on Oct. 10.

No bystanders or police were injured as a result of this shooting, law enforcement officials said.
