Police: Woman shot and killed following standoff in South Philadelphia

A woman is dead after a tense hour-and-a-half standoff in South Philadelphia.

Police said the woman, who was armed with a gun, fired several shots,
then went inside a residence on the 2600 block of South 12th Street near
South Jessup and West Shunk streets shortly before 4:30 p.m.

Authorities declared a barricade situation. After investigators gained
entry around 6 p.m., they found the woman inside, dead of an apparent
self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Medics pronounced her on the
scene.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
