Power Down Philly’s Bicycle-Powered Block Party (PHOTOS)

We visited the Power Down Philly block party, hosted by Verde Styles and aPhillyated Apparel, this afternoon at the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society’s 20th and Market Pop-Up Garden. As a matter of fact, the party is still raging on.

“The premise behind our clothing company is to do everything as green as possible,” said Nish Patel of Verde Styles. “We wanted to extend that to a block party raising awareness about clean energy in Philadelphia.”

Four “Pedal for Power” bikes donated by Temple University Engineering students powered a D.J. booth and sound system. Attendees were invited to hop on in exchange for gift cards from Chipotle.

A diverse crowd watched as models strutted the stage wearing apparel from the clothing companies, followed by a performance from indie rocker Dave Patten. Approximately 500 people came through, said Patel. “We couldn’t have done it without Hewlett Packard,” he added. The company gave a sizable donation to finance the effort.

Other sponsors and giveaways included Honest Tea, FUZE Beverages, GoodMusicAllDay.com and BuzzonBroad.com, who brought former Eagle Vince Papale for a book signing.

The event is on until 8 p.m., so there’s still a little time to drop in on the festivities. If not, catch the afterparty at Red Zone in Old City. Shuttle buses will be doing pick-ups at 20th and Market at 7:30 and 8 p.m.
