Gregory Yorgey-Girdy

Gregory Yorgey-Girdy (he/him) was sworn in as a newly elected judge for the Municipal Court in the First Judicial District, which handles criminal, civil and landlord and tenant cases. He became the first openly gay person of color to do so in Pennsylvania. In addition to previous work as an attorney, Gregory is a former co-chair of the Liberty City Democratic Club and former board of director of The Philadelphia LGBTQ Bar Association.

What is your favorite Pride month event or celebration?
Raising a rainbow flag for Pride Month, a month-long celebration of the LGBTQ+ community commemorating the anniversary of the New York City Stonewall riots in 1969.

What LGBTQ+ icons or activists have inspired you? 
Barbara Jordan was the first African American to serve in the Texas senate and the first African American woman from a Southern state to serve in congress in 1973.

What can people and corporations do to support the LGBTQ+ community year-round, not just during Pride month?
Learn to be a better ally, which is a lifelong commitment to constantly learning, growing, and improving how you stand up and show up for others.

How can businesses create more inclusive environments for their employees and patrons?
Training should focus on how to address homophobia and transphobia, and employees should be educated on LGBTQ+ issues.
