“Access to technology is a fundamental need for Philadelphia residents,” said Mayor Cherelle Parker. “The Power Up Tour is about equity, opportunity, and making sure that Philadelphians, in every zip code, can connect to and participate in economic opportunities.”
The first distribution event took place this week at Joseph W. Catharine School in Southwest Philadelphia, with future pops slated for May 28 and June 3 (District 8), and June 21 (District 6).
“At this moment in our history, internet access is a basic need and not a luxury,” said City Council President Kenyatta Johnson. “The Power Up Tour will play a role in reducing the digital divide in Philadelphia.”

Although about 88% of Philadelphia residents have some form of broadband internet access, only 61% of households report having at least one tablet or other portable wireless device, according to the city data.
“The Power Up Tour helps to ensure that our residents are not left behind. By providing devices directly to those who need them, the Office of Innovation and Technology is expanding access and creating pathways to education, employment, and empowerment” said Melissa Scott, Chief Information Officer.
