PPA worker dies after he was hit by truck

A lot officer for the Philadelphia Parking Authority was killed Wednesday morning after he was hit by one of the authority’s trucks.

The PPA identified the worker killed as Jeffrey Bayers, 60, a 13-year employee.

Police say Bayers died when a tow truck backed over him in a PPA lot on the 2500 block of Weccacoe.

The PPA is conducting an investigation into what happened. There is no word on any disciplinary action against the driver, the authority says.

“It’s a tragic accident,” said authority spokesman Marty O’Rourke. “We’re looking into seeing what happened.

O’Rourke says Bayers’ death marks the first time in recent memory that a PPA employee has died on the job, possibly the first in the authority’s history.
