PSPCA removes 19 cats from unlicensed South Philly Persian cat ‘breeder’

Law enforcement officials rescued 19 cats from a South Philly home where a self-identified Persian cat breeder was apparently neglecting their health, the PSPCA announced.

The Persian-style cats were found in a home on the 1800 block of West Passyunk Avenue on Tuesday after the PSPCA received an anonymous tip.

Philadelphia city ordinance prohibits ownership of more than 12 domestic animals in one home.

The PSPCA said all the cats were removed from the home “due to concerns over poor health requiring medical attention.”

The cats range in age from a two-month-old kitten to adult cats.

An investigation is ongoing and charges are pending, the PSPCA said. But 17 of the cats were signed over to the PSPCA by the owner and will be treated at PSPCA headquarters before being put up for adoption.

The other two cats not signed over are also at the PSPCA in medical treatment, pending the resolution of charges against the owner.

Anyone with information about cases of animal cruelty is urged to call Pennsylvania SPCA’s Cruelty Hotline at 866-601-SPCA.
