Quick hits: March First Friday guide

There are a ton of openings in galleries across the city. Our picks for a
couple events to hit up this weekend.

Space 1026: ‘Desert Island’

Reception Friday, 7-10 p.m.
1026 Arch St., Second Floor
www.space1026.com
Curator Gabe Fowler selected four artists who have previously displayed work at Desert Island, his Brooklyn comic-book shop. Check out installations by Ali Aschman, Lisa Hanawalt, James Moore and John Mejias.

Art After 5: Japanese Night
Friday, 5 p.m.
Philadelphia Museum of Art
www.philamuseum.org
This Friday night series — free with museum admission —opens up the galleries for music and art after the field trips and tourists go home. This week, indie rockers Me&Mars perform, and Stephen Starr’s crew will serve up Japanese bites.

Vox Populi
Reception Friday, 6-11 p.m.
319 N. 11th St., Third Floor
www.voxpopuligallery.org
There are five equally worthy shows opening here, but only one involves a player piano. For “Wow and Flutter,” Leticia Bajuyo and Joshua Hamilton took apart expired music technology — the aforementioned piano, cassettes, CDs — and found new purposes for them.

Proximity Gallery: ‘Work’
Reception Friday, 6-9 p.m.
2434 E. Dauphin St.
www.proximityart.com
Rob Morgan — who previously exhibited “Monsters vs. Robots” at this Fishtown gallery in 2009 — is back with more of his very awesome, creepily human robot paintings. Better luck next time, Monsters!
