Radio 104.5 banned from Piazza for obscene festival featuring Chvrches

Chvrches played at last weekend’s controversial festival.

The Radio 104.5 Summer Block Party festival has been banned from hosting events at the Piazza at Schmidt’s in Northern Liberties because of widespread reports after last weekend’s event of public urination and outdoor sex, both behind and between area homes.

The Northern Liberties Neighbors Association confirmed today that the Piazza terminated its contract with the radio station’s promoter on Wednesday, according to the Daily News.

Neighbors had complained of inappropriate activities happening at the Radio 104.5 Summer Block Party, which took place May 3, and featured performances by Chvrches, Phantogram and Cherub. The concert itself was well-received by fans and seemed calm.

But residents of the rowhome blocks that surround the Piazza said some of the fans were peeing on their front sidewalks just feet away from children, many were clearly intoxicated, and others were visibly having sex.

A neighbor’s cellphone footage of one incident was featured in an NBC report. Caution: The video below may be disturbing to some viewers.

Clear Channel, which owns Radio 104.5, released a statement apologizing for the unruly behavior:

We apologize for any of our fans who may have had a less than enjoyable experience at this past weekend’s block party. As these shows have become more popular and larger, we’ve worked with our partners at the Piazza to have them increase security and facilities.

Radio 104.5 is hosting another all-ages Block Party event at Penn’s Landing on June 7, featuring Bear Hands and The Head and the Heart.

Below, check out “Giant” by Bear Hands, remixed by OG Van B-Boys and featuring Kool AD from Das Racist.
