Raised in Chester, forged in Pittsburgh

Nasir Robinson’s nickname is “warrior.” It sure is fitting. And very, very appropriate.

Occasionally, a local player gets away from this area. A former star at Chester High, Robinson is flourishing with No. 4 Pittsburgh.

The rugged 6-foot-5, 220-pound junior forward scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Panthers in their 57-54 win over Villanova last Saturday at the Pavilion, snapping the Wildcats’ 46-game home winning streak.

“I’m a physical player and always have been,” said Robinson. “I was recruited by a lot of schools, and I just felt like Pitt was the best place for me. It wasn’t anything to any of the schools around here. I picked a school that best fit me and it has worked out. I love playing for Pitt.”

What about his nickname?

“Well, I am a warrior on the court,” said Robinson, who led Chester to the 2008 state title as a senior with a 33-1 record. “I try to get every rebound. I expect to get every rebound.”

And he expects to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

“Absolutely, we expect to win every time we step on the court,” Robinson said. “I think we have the talent to go deep and try to make it a special season. I’m very excited about the rest of our season.”
