Rangers get second shot at Fly Guys

It was an excruciatingly long train ride home for the New York Rangers after their 2009-10 season finale with the Flyers went to a shootout. That’s when Claude Giroux beat the usually impenetrable Henrik Lundqvist to give the Flyers the lead, then Brian Boucher stoned Ollie Jokinen to punch the Flyers’ playoff ticket.

And with it, an improbable journey to the Stanley Cup Finals. For the first time since, they meet tonight.

“I’m sure there will be some hard feelings from last year’s game,” said Scott Hartnell. “One game decided whether you’re golfing the next day or you’re going to the playoffs. I can’t imagine being on the other side of it.”

Then a Ranger, now a Flyer, Jody Shelley can.

“We thought once we got to a shootout we had a better chance,” said the 34-year-old. “Next thing we know, we’re on the train back to New York looking at each other.”

It got worse for them from there.

“We thought Philly would be out in the first round,” admitted Shelley, “but once you get in the playoffs, anything can happen.”
