Reading Terminal Forgotten Food Fest this Saturday

The storied Reading Terminal Market at 12th and Filbert streets is hosting a Festival of Forgotten Foods this Saturday, November 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will feature foods that were once popular in Philly’s sometimes-strange past and are now considered relics of “lost cuisine.”

Dishes will include:

– Wilbur Buds (an early equivalent to the Hershey’s Kiss made at the Wilbur Chocolate Factory in Litiz, PA)

– Snapper soup (turtle meat soup made famous at the former Bookbinder’s – or was it the other way around?)

– Fried catfish on a waffle

– Cape May salt oysters

– Paw Paw ice cream (made by storied local scoop shop Bassett’s from a tropical fruit indigenous to the U.S. that has been compared to the banana)

– Pepper hash (a condiment, formerly a Philly staple, made of finely chopped cabbage, peppers and carrots in vinegar)

– Pepper pot soup (a stew of beef tripe, peppers and other veggies that was popular during the Revolutionary War)

– Raspberry shrub (a non-alcoholic drink made with vinegar-marinated raspberries that was supposedly a favorite of Ben Franklin himself)

A live banjo player will perform from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to the festival is $15.95 for adults and $8.95 for kids and reservations can be made by calling 215-545-8007 ex. 3.
