Report: Eagles lose out on Vance Joseph, signs with the Broncos instead

The search for a defensive coordinator continues for the Philadelphia Eagles after one of their top candidates has been taken. According to Peter Schrager, former Broncos head coach Vance Joseph will go back to Denver, this time as a defensive coordinator under Sean Payton. Joseph, last season’s defensive coordinator for the Cardinals, interviewed with the Eagles for their own DC opening but ultimately decided on going back to Denver.

Vance Joseph’s defense has finished as a top-10 unit just once in seven years of defensive play-calling. Other names like Rex Ryan were also considered for the Broncos’ defensive staff.

Who do the Eagles turn to now?

The recent move changes the way Philadelphia is expected to attack its offensive and defensive coordinator openings. Young college names like Jesse Minter and Glenn Schumann have interviewed for the job while others like Chris Shula have NFL experience that has received time with the organization.

Philadelphia also has internal candidates like Dennard Wilson that are in contention for the top promotion. There also was a thought that Nick Rallis would be considered for the role before taking the job in Arizona. Outside of Vance Joseph, each candidate is in the age range of 37 years old to 40 years old. It seems like the Eagles are looking to add a young defensive coordinator to their staff.

As the days go by, the harder it will be for the Eagles to clear up their entire coaching staff and find suitable candidates for their top jobs. Another top name as now apparently taken a different job.
