Report: Matvei Michkov joining Flyers for 2024-2025 season

Matvei Michkov was drafted seventh overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2023 Entry Level Draft. The powerhouse forward and top Flyers prospect is coming over to play for Philadelphia sooner than expected.

Michkov’s KHL contract with SKA St. Petersburg had two years left, and it is reportedly now terminated. In other words, he was released. This means that the Flyers will have their star prospect for the start of the 2024-2025 season. This news wasn’t surprising to many, as speculations about Michkov joining Philadelphia have been coming out throughout the past month.

Flyers general manager Danny Briere addressed the media last week regarding Michkov’s status, stating, “Our current plan is to proceed into the next season without him. He still has two years remaining on his contract, and while we would be thrilled if circumstances change, I don’t have any new information to share at this time.”

While Michkov himself has yet to speak, numerous respected sources such as Kevin Weekes, Frank Seravalli, Hockey News Hub, and Anthony Di Marco, who broke the news, have confirmed that Michkov is coming over.

There is still yet to be a timeline for when Michkov will be coming over since this is a fluid situation, but this is a good sign for Philadelphia as this will enormously help their rebuilding.

Briere previously said that he wasn’t planning on doing much during free agency, but this could lead to a potentially different plan.
