The Eagles were able to emerge victorious against the Minnesota Vikings last night, but once again, it was a game mired by injuries. The Eagles limped into the game without the likes of Nakobe Dean, Reed Blankenship, and James Bradberry. Avonte Maddox suffered what looked like a shoulder injury during the second quarter and left the game promptly.
NBC’s John Clark would later report that the former Pitt DB tore his pectoral muscle during the incident after undergoing an MRI.
Avonte Maddox is Philly’s starting slot corner and his presence on a night without James Bradberry was critical. T.J Hockenson and Jordan Addison were both causing Philadelphia problems early on and after his exit, things only expedited.
Maddox left the game with 3 tackles to his name and was replaced by Mario Goodrich. We actually saw James Bradberry working out of the nickel during training camp, but the CB2 was in concussion protocol and unable to lend over his services.
As far as long-term replacements go, Josh Jobe is arguably best-suited to the slot, but the team may want to run with a more reliable name inside like Bradberry depending on the matchup. This could lead to some outside reps for Jobe, and potentially Mario Goodrich, who also should fare better outside.
The Eagles are much more equipped to deal with injuries at corner than they are most positional groups on the roster, so while it sucks to see a player as impactful as Avonte Maddox go down, the fact that there is such a deep pool of replacements to pick from is encouraging.
We’ll be sure to post updates as soon as they become available.
