Reports: AG Kathleen Kane to be charged Thursday?

Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane will face criminal charges based on a grand jury investigating her office for leaking confidential info, reports said Wednesday.

The Tribune-Review reported that Montgomery County D.A. Risa Vetri Ferman will formally charge Kane — possibly as soon as Thursday.

The grand jury investigating Kane was impaneled in Montgomery County and thus Ferman’s office had to review their presentment, issued in January, before deciding to file any charges.

A spokesman for the AG’s office denied any knowledge of plans to charge Kane.

“I have no way of knowing whether the story is accurate or not. Only the DA’s office would know,” said spokesman Chuck Ardo.

The Montgomery County D.A.’s office did not immediatelyrespond to a request for comment.

Kane has said as recently as last month that if she was charged, she would not resign.

The statewide grand jury was convened last year in Norristown by judicial order to investigate the release to the Philadelphia Daily News of details concerning the investigation into J. Whyatt Mondesire, the former head of the Philadephia branch of the NAACP, over suspected financial wrongdoing.

The secret proceeding was discovered and reported by the Inquirer.

Mondesire had never been officially charged or named as a suspect by the 2009 investigation which the Daily News reported on in June 2014, reportedly quoting heavily from an internal memo on the case.

Kane acknowledged leaking the memo to the press but denied committing a crime.

Kane, a Democrat, has claimed the investigation is politically motivated and that she is being targetedby Republicans.

Ferman, a Republican, has announced plans to resign the D.A.’s office and is running for a judgeship in November.
