Reports – Union nearing contract extension with Jose Martinez

As reported by Tom Bogert, the Philadelphia Union, and midfielder Jose Martinez are close to agreeing on a contract extension. The 28-year-old midfielder reportedly had interest from Turkish club Besiktas in the winter, but with this extension, Martinez will be sticking in Philadelphia for the near future.

While the extension is not 100% percent for Martinez, Ernst Tanner will want to get it signed as soon as possible before the summer transfer window opens up.

Martinez’s Impact on the Union

Since arriving in Philly in December 2019, Jose Martinez has had a massive impact on the club. He has become an important member of Jim Curtin’s squad, making 99 appearances since his arrival. While El Brujo has not scored for Philadelphia, his impact in other areas of the pitch has been pivotal for the club. He has used his physical and aggressive mindset to his advantage, and it has helped Philly out in many ways. He has also been huge in the transition from defending to attack, and that was especially shown with his pass up the field that led to the Union’s second goal against NYCFC.

Martinez has established himself as one of the top defensive midfielders in Major League Soccer, making it a no-brainer that Ersnt Tanner and Jim Curtin want to keep him around for the future. Since joining the Union, Martinez and the club have won the 2020 Supporters’ Shield, were Eastern Conference Champions in 2022, and have established themselves as one of the top teams in Major League Soccer.

All in all, the extension of Jose Martinez is something that Jim Curtin, Ernst Tanner, and the whole club will be happy with when it is signed and completed. Martinez has easily become one of the top midfielders in the league and has become an integral part of this Union core that has been so successful as of late. Let’s pray for some more trophies in the upcoming years with El Brujo!
