City Paper and AxisPhilly have created a searchable database that evaluates the food- safety performance of 3,800 city restaurants over the last five years.
The ratings are based on city Health Department inspection reports that are posted online, but written in thick bureaucratese.
Food-industry experts assigned points to each violation, based on its severity, and added up all the points. We divided the total by the number of years inspected.
The restaurants with the best performance were awarded four stars. Those that did the worst, were awarded one star.
