Nearly a dozen pharmacies in Philadelphia have already shuttered — or are set to be closed in the coming days — since Rite Aid declared bankruptcy two weeks ago.
The chain, in court filings submitted in mid-October, listed 154 locations, about 7% of its total stores, on a list of initial closures, as the company attempts to restructure amid mounting debt.
Among the 11 Philadelphia stores named, eight no longer show up on Rite Aid’s store locator, indicating that they have been closed:
- 5612 N. 5th St.
- 4011 Cottman Ave.
- 2801 W. Dauphin St.
- 8235 Stenton Ave.
- 7941 Oxford Ave.
- 136 N. 63rd St.
- 5440 Lansdowne Ave.
- 2401 E. Venango St.
- 6327-43 Torresdale Ave.
For now, the locations at 11750 Bustleton Ave. and 1315 E. Washington Lane remain open, although they are slated to be closed soon, according to the bankruptcy documents.
Rite Aid is also planning to, or has already, shuttered stores in Abington, Levittown, Ardmore, Pennsburg, Yardley, Chester, Yeadon, Quakertown and Conshohocken in the city’s Pennsylvania suburbs.
The chain, which last year relocated its headquarters from the Harrisburg area to the Navy Yard, previously closed about 210 locations nationwide between September 2022 and September 2023, bankruptcy records show.
For those who usually get their prescriptions filled at one of the affected stores, Rite Aid has said it plans to transfer medications to avoid disruptions.
“We will make every effort to ensure you have access to health services, whether at another Rite Aid or other nearby pharmacy,” CEO Jeffrey S. Stein wrote in an Oct. 15 letter to customers.
Rite Aid continues to operate 49 pharmacies within Philadelphia, though the company said in bankruptcy filings that additional stores could be closed.
