Rollins, Howard among 7 former Phillies on Hall of Fame ballot

The Baseball Hall of Fame released its 2022 ballot this week which featured seven former Philadelphia Phillies — three of whom were All-Stars with the team.

Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard and Jonathan Papelbon will make their first appearance on the Hall of Fame ballot.

Rollins spent 15 of his 17 pro seasons in Philadelphia, winning the 2007 NL MVP award while being selected to three All-Star Games. The Phillies’ all-time hits leader (2,306) also won four Gold Glove Awards.

Howard spent his entire 13-year career with the Phillies and is one of their most prolific sluggers. From 2005-2011, he hit 284 home runs as one of the game’s premier power hitters of the time, which included an NL MVP award of his own in 2006. His 382 career home runs trail only Mike Schmidt in franchise history.

While Papelbon might be better known for his time in Boston, he still owns the Phillies’ all-time save record despite playing just three-plus seasons with the team. He ranks 10th in MLB history with 368 saves.

In terms of other former Phillies, starting pitcher Curt Schilling is in his last year of eligibility and garnered 71% of the vote last year. But his actions and comments over the last year — including telling the baseball writers not to vote for him in 2022 — all but sealed his fate in missing out on Cooperstown enshrinement.

Scott Rolen is trending in the right direction having garnered 52.9% of the votes last year. He’s making incredible progress after debuting with just over 10% of the votes in 2018.

Billy Wagner also appears to be moving in the right direction toward enshrinement with 46.4% of the votes in 2021. He ranks sixth in MLB history with 422 saves.

While Schilling’s eligibility is up, Bobby Abreu could be kicked off the ballot this year. He received just 8.7% of the votes last year and his stock is likely going down. He needs at least 5% to remain on the ballot.

Here is the full ballot, which is headlined by the final years of eligibility for Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens:
