Roy Oswalt knows what it’s like to clinch while on the mound against the Cardinals. He experienced that just over two weeks ago when the Phillies won their fifth consecutive NL East title.
Oswalt was also on the hill against St. Louis in the 2005 NLCS, when his Astros clinched a berth in the World Series. The Phillies’ fourth ace has the chance to celebrate again, in what could be his last, best chance to win a ring.
“I feel really good,” Oswalt said. “After missing two months of the season [with a back injury], I feel the best I’ve felt this season. I want to make a big contribution. I feel confident. I’m part of one of the best pitching staffs in history. We were built to go far.”
Oswalt’s longtime teammate Brad Lidge is confident that the right-hander can lead the Phillies to another big victory.
“I’ve been around Roy Oswalt more than anybody else with this team,” Lidge said. “I was with him for [six] years with the Houston Astros, and this year, and the end of last year with the Phillies. I don’t think people realize what a competitor he is. He doesn’t want to lose.”
Lately, Oswalt has been bringing it. Over his last few starts, he’s touched 94 on the radar gun. His heater is complemented nicely with a great curveball and an effective changeup.
He’s going to take his repertoire to the mound against the squad he was rumored to be dealt to by the Astros in 2010.
“I’m with the right team,” Oswalt said. “I love being a Phillie. I’m hoping to be pitching deep into October with this team.”
