According to 610 WIP’s Howard Eskin, the Eagles are interested in acquiring the services of retired quarterback Brett Favre. Eskin cited team sources in a recent Twitter post.
Eagles starter Michael Vick didn’t waste any time chiming in. He loves the idea.
“I would be honored to have Brett Favre as a backup. That will be amazing. Learning how to toy with defenses the way he did his whole career,” Vick wrote via Twitter.
The Eagles aren’t allowed to comment on any free agent speculation until the lockout is lifted. Favre filed his retirement papers with the NFL this past January. The 41-year-old did the same thing in 2009, but was re-instated and signed with Minnesota.
The move — remember, this is still a rumor — makes a lot of sense for the Eagles. Favre is a veteran quarterback with experience in a West Coast offense. More importantly, he worked with both head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg in Green Bay. It is unclear what kind of compensation Favre would expect in this role.
