Rusty Edwards just happy to be in Birds uniform

During the first few days of OTAs, Trent Edwards looked like a journeyman quarterback. His throws were off-target and his footwork lethargic as he unofficially slipped to fourth on the Eagles’ QB depth chart.

Edwards knows the deal. He knows he’ll never be the No. 1 quarterback here in Philadelphia. He’s just trying to compete.

“I completely understand [the situation],” Edwards said Thursday. “I understand that I still need to get those reps, from the side, from behind, and making sure I’m picking up as much as I can as fast as I can.”

The Eagles brought the six-year veteran back in February, way before they drafted Nick Foles in the third round. Nothing is set in stone yet, of course. Far from it. But it seems highly unlikely that Edwards would beat out Foles or backup Mike Kafka this spring or in training camp.

Edwards knows he’s in a tough spot, but the 28-year-old is extremely grateful to be around guys like Mike Vick and DeSean Jackson. He’s also very familiar with Andy Reid’s reputation for grooming signal-callers.

“I’m happy to be here with the Eagles,” Edwards said. “For me to sit and watch and learn the system, and to be around those coaches and players — there are weapons everywhere and it’s just a matter of me doing my job, improving, and hopefully getting to where I need to be.”

And Edwards will be the first to acknowledge that where he needs to be and where he is right now aren’t even on the same train track.

“I don’t have a timetable,” he said. “I’m just trying to tweek some things and have made some progress, but I have a long way to go.”

Maclin ready for breakout 2012 season

Jeremy Maclin is antsy. He wants the 2012 season to start after missing time and battling through a mysterious illness last year.

This season, Maclin reported to OTAs in a bulked-up frame. He’s expecting big things.

“I wish the season started tomorrow,” Maclin said.

Mike Vick is predicting this will be Maclin’s best year to date.

“He has worked tremendously hard over the offseason,” Vick said. “He has caught a ton of balls the last four-five days.”
