Saturday: Recycle your Christmas tree and old electronics at Clark Park

While some folks have turned to goats for Christmas tree disposal, most people rely on more, let’s say, traditional measures.

Still, the idea of grinding your mummified Christmastimeconifer into mulch to beautify your favorite neighborhood park sounds like a good idea, too. And, that’s exactly what’s going on in Clark Park on Saturday, Jan. 9.

From 10:00-4:00 p.m., citizens are encouraged to bring their Christmas trees to Clark Park at 43rd and Baltimore “and have them recycled into wood chip mulch to be used in the park and in community gardens,” explained the University City District (UCD). The special event happens simultaneous to the regular Clark Park Farmers Market.

Even better? There’ll be free roasted marshmallows and hot chocolate available for attendees. While the event is technically free,UCD requests a $10 donation per tree. Organizers saidproceeds from the recycling eventwill fund UC Green, which beautifies the surrounding neighborhood with flora and community cleanups.

In addition to grinding up trees, folks will be accepting electronics until 2:00 p.m.to be recycled, too. UCD added that, as people often receive electronics as Christmas presents, safe disposal of the old ones is important.

By recycling them at an organized event, folks can “be confident than any potentially harmful materials will be disposed of properly,” UCD said.Local residents and small businesses alike can bring anything with a plug – just no smoke detectors, large appliances like washers or dryers or projection TVs.

Some electronics, particularly those with tubes like old TVs or computer monitors, may require a $20 disposal fee, though.
