Scaffolding collapses onto Fairmount street

Construction scaffolding collapsed on a residential street in Fairmount Tuesday afternoon, seriously damaging several cars.

No injuries were reported.

A Metro reader sent in photos of the crash, noting that the affected cars appeared to have been totaled.

A Department of Licenses & Inspections spokeswoman said an inspector was on his way to the crash site just before 2 p.m.but had no further information about the incident.

The scaffolding appeared to be on the side of a rowhouse at the intersection with the owners listed as Cheltenham, Pa. residents. The owners did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A police spokesman confirmed officers responded to the scene, but said they had no information about conditions at the collapse site.

The incident occured after L&I has been under a microscope for its handling of construction and demolition sites ever since the fatal Salvation Army collapse in June 2013.
