As a hub for learning and knowledge, the Franklin Institute is a place where a curious mind can always play—even after hours.

The cultural institution has recently unveiled the start of their 2022 season of Science After Hours, a fan favorite that gives Philadelphians a chance to experience the venue in a new way while also showcasing local makers and shakers in the creative world. This go-around’s theme is officially titled ‘Spectacular Spectacular,’ an evening inspired by the legendary Moulin Rouge cabaret, with big top acts and a dazzling taste of Philly flavor.

Kicking off this weekend on Friday, April 1, from 8 to 11 p.m., attendees ages 21+ are invited to dress in their fanciest flair and dive right into the “spectacular spectacle.” As the official release states, the Franklin Institute tapped local Philadelphia Argentine Tango School for dance lessons and energetic performances and the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts for aerial acrobatics, tightwire, and plate-spinning. This all happens alongside performances by the 10-piece brass band Snacktime Philly, plus a prize-filled Bingo hosted by showman and bandleader of the power funk group Johnny Showcase & The Mystic Ticket, Johnny Showcase, with special guests Rumi Kitchen and Rose Luardo.

The performances however are just the start. The Sights and Sounds Science Revue section will act as a revolving cabaret-style science demo extravaganza, and the FI’s Planetarium will be officially dubbed the Starlight Lounge with “the jazzy, soulful, and often funky soundtrack of local nostalgia king Skeme Richards.”

As the Franklin Institute says, Science After Hours has been refreshed and will feel new compared to past events of similar nature. Adults will experience even more live performances in an immersive nightlife scene, with reimagined pop-up programming and cocktails via cash bar as they explore the iconic museum, including rooftop stargazing.
