Second Roxborough High School shooting suspect arrested

Another suspect has been apprehended in the shooting that left a 14-year-old boy dead and four other teenagers injured following a junior varsity football scrimmage last month at Roxborough High School.

Zyhied Jones, 17, was arrested Thursday morning by homicide detectives and agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives who were carrying out an arrest warrant on the 2700 block of W. Albert Street in North Philadelphia, police said.

The teenager will be charged with murder, four counts of aggravated assault, conspiracy, firearms violations and other offenses, according to authorities.

Prosecutors on Wednesday announced that 21-year-old Yaaseen Bivins would face the same charges for his alleged role in the shooting. Bivins was taken into federal custody last week on allegations that he illegally purchased ammunition, officials said.

An arrest warrant is out for a third suspect, 16-year-old Dayron Burney-Thorne, who has yet to be captured.

Police have said they believe five shooters and a driver participated in the ambush, which occurred Sept. 27 on Pechin Street between the football field and the school.

Nicolas Elizalde, a W.B. Saul High School student who played football for Roxborough, was shot in the chest and died a short time later. Gunfire also struck four other boys ranging in age from 14 to 17. More than 60 bullets were fired, investigators said.

Attorneys for Zyhied and Bivins could not be identified Thursday.
