SEPTA offering reward for information in attack

SEPTA is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrests of the suspects who violently assaulted a transit employee last week in Center City.

On Sunday, the authority released surveillance images of four of the young people involved in the attack, which occurred at around 11:30 p.m. Monday, March 15, at the City Hall station.

Transport Workers Local 234 released a video of the incident Thursday along with a statement calling for the resignation of SEPTA Transit Police Chief Thomas Nestel. He told reporters later in the day that he would not be stepping down.

In the footage, a group of what appear to be teenagers attacks a SEPTA track worker on the platform. Officials said the violence was unprompted, and the 55-year-old employee sustained a concussion, cuts and bruises.

Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call transit police at 215-580-8111.

Local 234 has called for enhanced safety protocols, and SEPTA representatives have said the authority is reviewing its security standards.

As part of that initiative, the authority temporarily closed Somerset Station in Kensington on Sunday and plans to bring in 60 unarmed security guards to man the Market-Frankford Line.
