A SEPTA rider was in critical condition and four other people were hospitalized after a Norristown High Speed Line train crashed Sunday morning in Montgomery County, officials said.
The incident occurred at around 9:45 a.m., when a one-car NHSL train collided into a safety bumper at Norristown Transportation Center, the line’s northern terminus, SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch said.
Busch said the operator and four passengers were injured and transported to local medical centers. One rider suffered head injuries and was airlifted to Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, he added.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, though Busch said the vehicle was traveling at a low speed as it approached the end of the line.
The National Transportation Safety Board has launched a probe into the crash, with federal investigators expected to arrive Sunday night, the agency told Metro.
Known as the “M” under SEPTA’s recently reorganized Metro system, the NHSL runs from 69th Street Transportation Center to Norristown. Service was back up and running Sunday afternoon, with minor delays.
