Seven killed, 14 injured in shootings

Seven people were killed by gunfire Sunday and early Monday morning in Philadelphia and at least 14 others were injured in one of the city’s most violent days of recent memory.

There were no indications that the shootings were directly related to ongoing looting and vandalism, which spread Sunday from Center City to neighborhoods across the city, including West Philly and Port Richmond.

Just before midnight Sunday, three people showed up at Penn Presbyterian Hospital after being shot on the 3900 block of Fairmount Avenue, police said. Two of the victims, a 25-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, died.

The third person, a 25-year-old man, was in critical condition and immediately taken into surgery, according to authorities.

In Eastwick, officers found 19-year-old Maurice Sorzano, of Sharon Hill, sitting in the front passenger’s seat of a Honda Accord with a gunshot wound to his head at around 10:30 p.m. on the 2800 block of Island Avenue.

Sorzano was pronounced dead at the scene and a second victim, a 22-year-old man, showed up to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital with a gunshot wound to his right thigh, police said.

Earlier in the evening Sunday, just after 8 p.m., a 23-year-old man died after being shot 15 times on 49th Street just north of Market Street in West Philadelphia, according to authorities. He was later identified as Dequan Collins, of East Mount Airy.

Investigators said the shooters were masked men inside a dark-colored Nissan or Acura.

Police were called to 26th Street and Lehigh Avenue just after 4 p.m. and found Chris Odom, 30, who lived nearby, with four gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he died about 15 minutes later.

Authorities described the suspect as a black man in his 20s who was wearing a blue and white mask, blue denim jacket, black T-shirt, gray pants, and yellow and green Nike sneakers.

Just after midnight, a 34-year-old was caught in a barrage of bullets on the 6300 block of Musgrave Avenue in East Germantown. He was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to his head, hands and right knee, and he died at 12:15 a.m.

In North Philadelphia, a man died after being shot once in the stomach during a domestic altercation Sunday afternoon on the 200 block of W. Oxford Street, police said. Officers arrested a suspect and recovered a gun.

Four people, including a 12-year-old boy, were injured after gunfire erupted at 5 p.m. Sunday on the 700 block of E. Clearfield Street in Harrowgate.

The boy heard shots and realized he was hit in the arm, police said. A 21-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to her head, and a 26-year-old man was shot in the leg, according to authorities.

A 52-year-old was shot three times to his right shoulder and arm, and he is listed in critical condition at Temple University Hospital, police said.

Investigators said the shooting may have been sparked by an argument that occurred between a woman and people in a black vehicle. Authorities described the suspect as a Hispanic man with a beard who was wearing a white T-shirt, gray and black camouflage shorts and white socks with red sandals.
