Let’s put 24 seconds up on the clock one more time and bang away …
NOW HE’S A SHUTDOWN CORNER.
Asante Samuel and Deion Sanders had a brief Twitter war two seasons ago. It went like this:
The Hall of Famer went on national TV and called Asante the best “off-corner” in the NFL, implying that Samuel wasn’t a man-on-man, lockdown cornerback.
That barb was followed up by Asante tweeting back: @DeionSanders is the biggest hater in the world. He ain’t no real FL boy he is a fake. FL boys keep it real. Men lie women lie numbers don’t.
There was a little more to that story, including some funny locker-room comments from Asante, but we digress. The reason we bring it up now is Deion’s own family problems. The man known as Prime Time is being sued for $200 million by his ex-wife.
Why? Because — her words, not mine — Deion often referred to her as a “worthless, gold-diggin hoe that no one else would want.”
Oh, and she also alleges Deion harmed the family pets. Someone get PETA on the line.
This would be a good time for Asante to hit the man while he’s down. However, the only hinge of a connection we could make was this one from Asante Wednesday morning: S/o to all my Orlando fans. I’ll be in town this weekend. Get at me. For what it’s worth, Deion was born in Fort Myers, Fla.
RUSSIAN RAPPER’S DELIGHT.
The Knicks have Jeremy Lin. The team is filling up Madison Square Garden again, shattering TV ratings and looking like the favorites in the Atlantic Division.
The Nets … well, they have 99 Problems and Jay-Z. Which brings us to their Russian billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov. Hey, what is the capital of Great Britain? We’re excitedly anticipating the Ilya Bryzgalov “universe” remix.
HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH.
Every February we take time out to salute those African-Americans that have made an impact or difference in society. And that sentiment should carry over into the sports arena.
Here in Philadelphia, we have a bona fide superstar in the making in Wayne Simmonds.
Simmonds, one of only 20 black players in the entire NHL, continued his torrid streak Tuesday night by netting his 22nd goal of the season with just 10 seconds remaining and sending the game into OT. The Flyers went on to win and Simmonds now ranks third on the team in goals scored (22) and fourth in points (39). Mike Richards who?
CNN Headline News did a short piece on racism in hockey not too long ago. The network interviewed four black players, all from the Atlanta Thrashers. Anthony Stewart shared a story of once hearing fans chanting for him to “break his legs” after Stewart committed a penalty. We all know the story of a Canadian fan slinging a banana at Simmonds in the preseason.
The highlight of the piece comes with Dustin Byfuglien holding up a homemade picture that a little kid sent to him reading: Hey ‘Big Buff’ I’m a black hockey player and my dad calls me ‘Lil Buff.’
Who says we can’t get serious/emotional here!? Anyway, here’s A History of Black Hockey.
WELCOME KIM K.
Dan Gross, of the Philly Daily News, informs us that Kim Kardashian will be in our area Sunday night. She is set to pitch new items from her clothing line at QVC in West Chester.
ORLANDO: DISNEYWORLD FOR GROWN UPS.
This weekend the best and brightest, and Jeremy Lin, will invade Orlando for NBA All-Star Weekend. It’s an event a former black colleague often referred to as (his words, not mine), “The Black Super Bowl.” For the record, he attended when it was in New Orleans.
The Rising Stars Challenge, formerly the rookies vs. sophomores game, gets top bill Friday night. Former Sixers star Charles Barkley fielded a squad led by John Wall, Kyrie Irving and the Sixers’ Evan Turner. They’ll be up against Team Shaq, led by Lin, Blake Griffin and Ricky Rubio.
Saturday night is the slam dunk competition. All you need to know is that LeChoke James won’t compete in it, but he’s offered to serve as a judge. We’ll call that The Decision, Part Two.
Sunday is the actual game which marks the All-Star debut of Andre Iguodala for the East.
What? You don’t care? Good, neither do we.
Keep on eye on the halftime show when Pitbull, Ne-Yo and breakout babe Nayer take center court. The Cuban bombshell is working on an album and the singer/model/dancer has appeared on “Dancing with the Stars.”
