There are a few interesting reasons to head to the W Philadelphia’s Wet Bar and Deck this summer, and a new cocktail program has become the latest appeal from the rooftop oasis.
Located high in the sky on the 7th floor, the pool offers an elevated view of the city, and it’s open all year long. It’s perhaps one of the largest draws for the W by guests, and it’s clear to see why — there’s nothing really quite like it in Philly.
Access to the pool is easy; it’s right down the hall from the venue’s AWAY spa, and you’re welcome to use it if you’ve booked a treatment, or, are staying at the hotel. But access isn’t just for those at the W, anyone can purchase a day pass ($80) or cabana ($500 weekdays, $700 weekends for up to 8 people) complete with your own list of special services at the venue to try some of the fare and drinks.
For the summer of 2024, the Wet Bar is offering Isai Xolalpa’s new spin on the menu, which he corralled together after landing the role as the Director of Bars and Lounges (which spans not only the Deck but also the W’s lobby bar, aka the Living Room.)
For the pool-side bar however, which in and of itself is worth it to check out, Philadelphians will be able to post up at the breezy locale’s bar seats or tables, which works well with the inside-outside concept of the space. The bar bleeds into the pool area and vice versa, so even if you aren’t suiting up to hop into the water, you still get a feel for the atmosphere.
Bar-wise, patrons at the W will be able to sip on different variations of classic drinks that have an international spin put on them, born out of Xolalpa’s time spent working in Australia and across North America, from Mexico City to Aspen.
The menu spans the EspressoTina (their take on an espresso martini) boasting Vanilla-infused Grey Goose, Vigo Amaro, MHL Chocolate Liquor, MHL Espresso, coconut liquor, and coffee oil; the Tiki Latte with Bacardi 8, pineapple, super kumquat, simple syrup, espresso oil, and orange bitters; and other sips like the stand-out signature Spiced Sangria they now offer, mixed with Hennessey VS, spiced pear, cranberry juice, simple syrup and Bauer White Wine.
Other stand-outs on the menu mark most drink lovers fancies: There’s a Watermelon Mule for those looking for something refreshing, their own take on a Paloma and a libation called the Taquito Pastor for tequila lovers, a sweetened version of a gin and tonic for locals craving a classic sip with a twist, and even a refreshed version of a vodka soda subtly dubbed “Always Sunny.” The bar also serves up Zero-Proof mocktails for those looking for something less spirited (and both are worth it to try whether you imbibe or not), and also, a series of plates to share or indulge in all on your own.
The Vegetable Summer Rolls stand out for their flavor and freshness, and the Cheesesteak Empanadas for the quality of their meat—and if you tell locals in Philly they can get their hands on a scrumptious version of the sandwich at a pool-side bar, it almost sounds too good to be true (but just almost.) Other bites span a burger made with a pretzel bun, Chili Lime Shrimp Tacos and other seasonal additions being served up.
The new offerings at currently available at the Wet Bar (1439 Chestnut St.) daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. More information and ways to book passes and cabanas can be found at marriott.com
