Sixers Notebook: Welcome, Maurice Harkless

Terrence Jones and Perry Jones III were still on the board when the Sixers picked at No. 15 Thursday night. So was Tyler Zeller.

Nope, the Sixers decided on another tweener to add to their youthful mix by taking Maurice Harkless from St. John’s. Harkless, 19, is the prototypical small forward, measuring in at 6-foot-9, 208 pounds with a 7-foot wingspan. Scouts say he runs the floor like a guard.

Sure sounds a lot like Thaddeus Young. It also sounds a lot like Andre Iguodala’s days are numbered. In fact, ESPN analyst informed viewers that the Sixers are actively shopping Iguodala and he expects the swingman to be traded this summer.

Harkless averaged 15.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks last season for the Red Storm. He shot 45.2% from the field and 67.6% from the free-throw line. His name was Moe at college, but wants to be known as Maurice in the NBA. He’s the highest drafted player from St. John’s since Malik Sealy in 1992. On to the videotape …
