To say “they just don’t make them like they used to” would be accurate for almost any sports apparel store other than Mitchell & Ness. Here, they have perfected the art of the throwback jersey.
You won’t find the latest Vick jersey in this authentic sports store. Instead, the clothes are made exactly the way they were decades ago — wool flannel and all, with some more modern cuts — and there’s a collection of each team’s rich history in the strictly vintage logos that they use.
But even so, these are sports jerseys: So why open a sophisticated new location with deep mahogany paneling, soft lighting and antique uniforms in display cases? “It varies [from the original location] in look and feel. There’s more of a vintage aesthetic,” says Mitchell & Ness President Sean McKinney. Sure enough, it feels more like a posh boutique than some apparel warehouse. “If customers are going to spend $250 on a jersey, it can’t just be hanging on a rack with the others,” he adds.
