The organizationthat wants to save the SS United States says it has raised $100,000 from donors across the globe after putting out a public appeal to help stave off the scrap yard.
But questions remain as to whether that effort is enough to save the hulking ship, which has been berthed in South Philadelphia for 19 years awaiting a rehabilitation that has never come.
RELATED: SS United States caretaker talks history, preservation The SS United States Conservancy announced in October that the $60,000 per month that it costs to maintain the ship was becoming unsustainable. It said it could be sold for scrap by the end of that month. While it is unlikely the ship will ever sail again, the conservancy is holding out hope that someone will redevelop it into a hotel, office or banquet facility.
