When Steak 48 opened on Broad Street in 2020 from James Beard Award-nominated restaurateurs and brothers Jeffrey and Michael Mastro, the fine dining establishment drew buzz for its menu items, and atmosphere, but most of all, its attention to detail in its experience.
The eatery not only offers menu items that are bold with flavor, but an encounter that will truly cater to every elegant need you have—or never knew you had.
“[We pride ourselves on] the total experience. When a guest chooses us for dinner, that is a huge compliment that we do not take for granted,” said Oliver Badgio, Chief Branding Officer of Steak 48 in a statement to Metro at the time of opening.
“Our promise is to project and deliver a remarkable feeling to all of our guests – to make them feel special and welcome from the moment they are seated and their evening begins, to the time they head home. Whether it’s their hundredth reservation with us or their first dine, we treat all guests with kindness and consideration, creating a total experience of excellent food, atmosphere and luxury personal service that our people and Steak 48 are known for.”
It’s no secret that dining here is one that costs. Luckily, the cost seems to be warranted with properly portioned dishes, a wait staff that never seems to be far away when you need something, a variety of options on the docket and some extras—like when you order a martini and you get a glass full of spirits and a shaker with the extra right on the side.
Steak 48 has a menu chock full of dishes and drinks that bring an unexpected, yet very welcomed new take on what a modern American steakhouse looks like. Choices range from prime steaks, ultra-premium wagyu beef, locally-sourced seafood and an extensive, and a diverse wine and cocktail list, but the minutia of the wow-factor is certainly in the details.
You enjoy deviled eggs as an appetizer? How about crispy shrimp deviled eggs to up your app game? Ordering a steak or seafood entree? Up the ante even more by adding on sauteéd blue cheese, chef-styled burrata, truffle butter, a crab cake “oscar”, fresh topped tomato herb gremoleta and more. Adding some spirits to your meal as well? Why not throw in some blue cheese or Philadelphia cream cheese stuffed olives to your dirty martini and your tastebuds will be set.
Other stand-outs from each part of the menu include chicken fried lobster tails, a steak knife BLT wedge salad, wagyu beef tartare and colossal shrimp cocktail from the starters, to Chilean sea bass, prime steakhouse meatloaf, and a bone-in veal chop for the main event.
Looking for sides? Why not try corn crème brulée—which is as decadent as it sounds with sweet corn mixed with cream and then finished with turbinado sugar. Or, go for a double-baked potato, whipped praline sweet potato, creamy mac & cheese (with Alaskan king crab and rock shrimp if you want to upgrade), or even something like asparagus fries.
To end things on a sweet note, Philadelphians also have their pick of the litter with triple layer key lime pie, a cookies & cream popcorn sundae, red velvet bread pudding, s’mores in a jar and a crispy banana split among some of the options.
The luxury sets in however as soon as you step in the door, with aesthetic points throughout the massive space (each room and area truly has it’s own chic vibe). And depending where you sit, it’s a completely different experience.
The bar area has dimly lit lights accented by sparkling fixtures, while the dining room beside it has large windows and booths next to the bustle of Broad Street. There are also rooms with more of an elegant lounge vibe, an upstairs with a birds eye view of the restaurant, and even more private tables with a glass wall right next to the kitchen so you can see everything happening.
One thing is for sure no matter where you sit and what you order here at Steak 48…you’re in for a treat.
