Stopping short: Rollins hits DL

Let’s see how the Phillies deal with adversity, only two weeks into this young season.

The team placed Jimmy Rollins on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a right calf strain. Infielder Wilson Valdez had his contract selected from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

“We believe it to be a mild to moderate strain and we’re hopeful it will be a two- to four-week recovery,” Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “As in all of our injuries, precautions will be taken so that Jimmy is 100 percent when he returns to the field.”

Rollins showed up at the ballpark last night wearing tape on his injured leg, but didn’t sound overly concerned. This is the second time in his nine-year career he’s been on the DL.

“It’s something I never planned on, but it happens,” Rollins said last night. “It’s a lot better than I thought it might be.”

Rollins, 31, is hitting .391 with a home run, three RBIs and eight runs scored in seven games. Shane Victorino will bat leadoff until Rollins is ready to return.
