The Top 10 Super Bowl winning teams of all-time

Posted

The ten Super Bowl winning teams in this list demonstrated both postseason and regular-season dominance. They all have something that distinguishes them from the pack. A name, an era, a play, or all three. Think “Super Bowl Shuffle” and “The Hogs” as examples. Whatever the reason, the ten Champions have both stood out during their era and withstood the test of time.

This list is not ranked; but in chronological order. All of these teams obviously won it all, but had I included losing teams, the 20000 New England Patriots would have been in the top four.

The Top Ten, Chronologically

1972 Miami Dolphins

The only wire-to-wire perfect season. The first and only team to do it. Their yearly champagne toast has lasted over 50 years. They also had two 1,000-yard rushers, Mercury Morris and Larry Csonka.

1978 Pittsburgh Steelers

The best version of the Steel Curtain dynasty, in my humble opinion. Terry Bradshaw won MVP after a thrilling 35–31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XIII. Lynn Swann and John Stallworth electrified fans with their playmaking.

1984 San Francisco 49ers

Walsh, Montana, Craig, and the league’s best defense. This was peak 49ers, with no weak spots. They became the first team to win 15 games in a 16-game season, then won 3 more en route to becoming Super Bowl XIX Champions.

1985 Chicago Bears

The most overwhelming single-season force the league has ever seen. Also, the best song and video by an NFL team. Historically dominant defense, a bullying run game, and a postseason in which they allowed just 10 total points. Insane.

1989 San Francisco 49ers

Montana and Rice are at full fury. Outscored playoff opponents 126–26. The Niners finished the regular season 14–2 and finished off the John Elway-led Broncos 55–10 in the big game.

1991 Washington Redskins

Criminally underrated. Elite offensive line, deep skill group, suffocating defense. The Hogs only allowed QB Mark Rypien to be sacked 7 times all season, over 421 passes. That is OL dominance!

1999 St. Louis Rams

The Greatest Show on Turf. Warner, Faulk, Bruce, Holt = unstoppable. One of the highest peaks in the modern era. The offense totalled 526 points over 16 games, the 4th-highest total at the time.

2013 Seattle Seahawks

The Legion of Boom! A historically great defense, an elite rushing attack. They blew out Denver, led by Peyton Manning, to the tune of 43–8. Shutting down Manning on the biggest stage describes how elite they were.

2019 Kansas City Chiefs

Mahomes started the dynasty. The Chiefs overcame a plethora of injuries to make comeback after comeback, erasing deficits and allowing Andy Reid to finally win it all. The first of three Super Bowls for Patrick, who many believe has a shot to catch Tom Brady with 7.

2024 Philadelphia Eagles

A roster built with championship architecture. The best trenches in the game on both sides of the ball. They had depth, experience, and explosive plays via Saquon Barkley, who rushed for 2005 yards during the regular season. In the big game, the Chiefs loaded the box to stop Barkley and dared Jalen Hurts to beat them. He responded with three touchdowns, 2 via the air, including the famed “Dagger” play to DeVonta Smith. They won 40–22, but it was not that close. The Eagles put in backups in the fourth quarter, which is when the Chiefs scored 16 of their 22 points.

Author’s Note

Before any Cowboys fan finds their way to this list and believes it is biased from a Philadelphia Eagles reporter, allow me to explain my reasoning.

There are Dallas Cowboys teams that absolutely deserve consideration, but they just didn’t crack my Top 10 “all-time best Super Bowl winners” list because the cutoff is insanely, almost unfairly elite.

Every team in the top 10 posted a historic point differential, dominated during the regular season, and delivered iconic Super Bowl wins.

Lists are meant to be debated, so let me know who I missed from your top ten list.

As always, thank you for reading!
