The roar of a sold-out stadium can drown out almost anything, but not everything. A.J. Brown’s highlight catches light up scoreboards and send Philadelphia fans into a frenzy, yet the battle that mattered most began long before he wore midnight green.
Behind the touchdowns and game-breaking speed was a young man wrestling with a darkness that no defender or fan could see. The smile that A.J. Brown flashed after a big play masked nights of doubt and despair. After he powered through defenders on the field, he was wrestling a weight that threatened to silence him completely.
Fans saw a rising star; few imagined the private struggle behind the brilliance. That hidden battle, and the courage it took to speak it aloud, would become the most important chapter of his career. Because the real story of A.J. Brown isn’t just about yards gained and touchdown celebrations on Sunday, it’s about a man who chose life when despair nearly won.
Choosing Life, Sharing Hope

In November 2020, the weight of struggle nearly crushed him. “I had no more hope for better days, and everything was just going wrong for me.” He never detailed the exact causes, and he didn’t need to.
One year later, on November 12, 2021, A.J. Brown marked the anniversary of that dark night with a candid TikTok post. His voice was steady but heartfelt.
“I just wanted to put out a positive message that I’m still here. I’m still growing. I’m still learning. I’m blessed. I’ve got a lot of things to be grateful for, and someone was there for me. So reach out to your loved ones and ask them how they’re doing and listen to them, because it’s important.”
By speaking so openly, Brown invited others to see strength in vulnerability. He knew some might wonder why a professional athlete, seemingly at the height of success, would reveal such thoughts. But he also knew his honesty could help someone else survive.
Still Standing

A.J. Brown’s advocacy hasn’t ended. After a recent win over the Rams, he wore a shirt that read: “Check on your teammates. I’m still standing. I’m still here.” The message was simple but powerful. A quiet reminder that even heroes of Sunday afternoons need care and connection.
I asked him about the message on his shirt, and he shared some advice to anyone struggling with their mental health.
“Do what makes you happy, whatever that looks like. Tough times don’t last. Keep chipping away, keep chopping wood, carrying water. Give yourself grace, too. Take it one day at a time. What I used to tell myself was ‘one more day. one more day, get through one more day. And once you get through that day, do it again the next day. And just do it again the next day. Do whatever makes you happy. Listen to music, or go for a walk, get some sunlight. What helped me, I prayed. Continue to talk to God.”

A.J. Brown's true strength

Brown continues to dominate defenses, but his most important work may be the way he normalizes conversations about mental health. He remains unapologetically himself, striving for excellence on the field while encouraging others to value their own lives off it.
Philadelphia will always cheer for the spectacular plays he makes on Sundays, but A.J. Brown’s courage to show that real strength includes asking for help and offering it in return is a legacy unmatched by his athleticism. He has shown that even heroes of the gridiron can hurt emotionally, and that speaking those truths aloud can save a life. Maybe someone else’s, maybe even your own.
